Hemp seeds contain up to 35% oil, which is high in various unsaturated fatty acids (around 80%). This is higher than in any other vegetable oil. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are not produced by our bodies and must be taken in through food. Hemp seed oil contains these fatty acids in an ideal ratio of 1:3. Nutritionists recommend consuming about 7–11 g of Omega-6 and 2–3.5 g of Omega-3 fatty acids per day. This amount is contained in one tablespoon of hemp seed oil. These fatty acids are essential for our health – they improve blood circulation, help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, give energy, nourish skin, nails and hair, reduce inflammation and maintain joint health.
Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are essential for brain and nerve cell development and are therefore especially necessary for children.
Hemp seeds also contain a high amount of protein – around 25–30%, which is more than beef or fish, at around 6 grams per tablespoon. Among other proteins, hemp also contains globulin, which is the third most abundant protein in the human body and is responsible for protection against harmful micro-organisms. Globulins, also known as immunoglobulins, are necessary for maintaining a healthy immune system.
The fatty acids in hemp seed oil are essential for:
- energy production,
- a stable nervous system,
- brain development and functioning,
- skin health and elasticity,
- healthy metabolism,
- lowering cholesterol and blood pressure,
- heart health,
- hormone production,
- maintaining immunity,
- alleviating the symptoms of menopause.
- For prophylaxis: 1–2 teaspoons daily before meals.
- As a tasty and nutritious addition to other dishes – potatoes (instead of butter), roots, peas, beans, salads, soups, etc.
- Add to yoghurt, cottage cheese and other sour milk products, as well as baked goods.
- In beauty care, the oil is massaged into the skin, making it soft, supple and glowing. Hemp seed oil has moisturising and anti-inflammatory properties. It absorbs well and does not form a greasy layer. Massaging the oil into the hair and scalp one hour before washing leaves the hair healthy, shiny and manageable.
